Rapper Lil Wayne is heading for jail after pleading guilty to attempted weapons possession. The Lollipop star expected to go through a pre-trial court hearing in New York over a series of charges after a semi-automatic loaded gun was discovered in his tour bus two years ago. But he took everyone by surprise by pleading guilty as part of a deal that is expected to see him jailed for a year.

Had been found guilty at trial, he faced up to seven years in jail. Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Charles Solomon called it “a greatly reduced sentence.”
Wayne – real name is Dwayne Carter – was wearing black jeans and a white T-shirt under a blue, fur-lined coat in court. Asked if he was ready to plea to second-degree attempted weapon possession, a felony, he said in a clear voice: “Yes, sir.” For all his violent lyrics, his guilty plea was utterly well-mannered. When the judge warned that he would not be able to withdraw the plea as some people try to do.
The rapper said: “I’m not one of those people.” Police pulled over Lil Wayne’s tour bus in Columbus Circle on July 22, 2007. They said they had seen and smelled marijuana smoke before the bus left a concert venue minutes earlier. Police said as an officer approached, Wayne tossed away a Louis Vuitton bag containing a gun. The defense initially disputed officers’ basis for searching the bus and noted that more than a dozen other people were aboard.
But prosecutors said small amounts of DNA found on the loaded weapon connected it to the platinum-selling artist. Carter, out on bail, will be formally sentenced in February. It is far from the end of his legal woes. The 27-year-old is scheduled for trial in Arizona on felony drug possession and weapons charges. He has pleaded not guilty in that case.
