What’s Wrong With Music Biz, per Ultimate Insider
The basic recording contract upon which most of the popular music business has been based for the past 50 years is fundamentally broken. This is not the sentiment of one of the countless critics who throw stones at the music industry from afar, usually for vague philosophical reasons, but rather the pragmatic opinion of a true insider: Tom Silverman, founder of Tommy Boy Records, which sold millions of records by hip-hop artists including Club Nouveau, Coolio, De La Soul, Digital Underground, Everlast, House of Pain and Naughty By Nature. Rescuing a Disco Demigod from Oblivion
Diplo’s ‘Favela on Blast’ Documentary to See Release in Disco, like the universe and many perplexing things within it, boasts a rich creation story that is sometimes acknowledged, but seldom fully understood. You are your own brand manager. Just like big-time companies like Starbucks, McDonalds and Dunkin Donuts, all of which take special care to manage its brands. And they know how to make billions of dollars managing them. Know it or not, you, too, are managing your personal brand, and not just every time you play a gig, but also every time you load in, every time you send an e-mail and every time you pick up the phone. Mad Men’s Shrewdest Musical Move & RJD2
Who’s not a fan of TV’s award-winning Mad Men? RJD2 is, although he was on the receiving end of a very shrewd move by Lionsgate, the producers of the hit AMC show. “It was a one-shot deal,†says RJ, about the instrumental version of “A Beautiful Mine†that intros the show. “Lionsgate wanted to buy the publishing, outright. I had never done that before, so I said, ‘No.’ … Finally, I relented.†Why?
