I’m Just Sayin…That’s some Bullshit: Global Attack Mixtape & Def Jam Distribution

Let me first apologize for the language that is about to be used…it will not be pretty.

I have been working on a few projects lately. One involves an International Hip Hop Music Festival. It is still in the planning stages but I am still trying to cover all bases and bring in a few partners as I go along and get a feel for who is interested and who is not.

Yesterday, I reached out to the owners of www.International-Hiphop.com in reference to being a sponsor. I hit them up via email. I wish I had a copy of the email that I sent but I do not, but it was requesting that the owner of the site give me a call. Someone called within the next 20 minutes.

I did not get the name but the person on the line stated that he was the owner. Our call lasted exactly 13:02 minutes.

For the next 7 minutes, without me asking, I have to hear the spill about how many websites he has, how many artist he’s worked with, how many media outlets he has, how many other options I can have…all this before I can tell him what I want.

I stated that to him my purpose in reference to the festival. He immediately begins to name drop. As if I care but I listen again to the names being dropped.

Finally frustrated and disturbed I tell him i am working on this festival from my angle, he ask me who was the booking agent. I told him I was the agent? He asked me was I licensed? I said no I do not have a license but what I do have is direct numbers to every single artist on the roster’s manager. These are contacts that I have accumulated over the years and I will work with them directly, I am not interested in getting an agent…” his reply…interesting.

Again, still disturbed, I replied.

I have direct working relationships with Collipark Music, Grand Hustle and UnAuthorized/Warner Brothers Records, why do I need a liaison?

He immediately asked me, what is my budget?

My reply, what’s your price?

He response, I need to know your budget so we can have a package tailor made to your budget. If your budget is $5, we put together a $5 package, if your budget is $5,000, we put together a $5,000 package. My reply, what is your price for an ad on your site?

His reply, what’s your budget look like…?

After hearing about how I need a budget for a couple more seconds, I told him I would put something together and hit him back as soon as I could.

End of conversation.

And then today I get the IM that is listed below, read for yourself:

Here is where things are a little touchy and iffy for me.

I mentioned some of the acts that were confirmed as a part of the festival. Confirmed as in ready to go so a budget is definitely established; it’s just not going to fruitless endeavors like this one. I have a website. I have quite a few actually so I know that I have a ballpark figure what it cost for an ad on any of the sites. It does not cater to your budget, it cost what it cost.

I hate it when I hear, do you have a budget, that hustle for how much money can I get out of you.

I’m not saying that you should not have a budget, I am saying that you should not divulge what your budget expenditures are going to be to everyone outside of your immediate network.

So as I am further researching this so called deal that one of his companies is offering it sounds vaguely familiar to one of the other bullshit artist scams that is going around with the Def Jam distribution.

Here is the sales pitch:

Most rappers eat that shit up.

I almost did too for both of my artist.

Here is the problem with both of these deals:

this is the website that both of these deals came from. See through TuneCore, you can get your own digital distribution for only 9.99 per single and 49.99 for an entire CD. I do nott know where the other 325 media outlets are out that they service to. If you get in this, ask for a list of outlets, I would be very interested in knowing which one. It could be the other lose affiliations used in the next piece of promotions via web/internet radio. That too you can connect through TuneCore with Jango. That service is only $99.00 to get. See where this is going?

– GLOBAL ATTACK MIXTAPE SERIES DONATES A PORTION OF PROCEEDS TO INTERNATIONAL NON PROFIT (501C3) THE HUNGER PROJECT

– ROYALTY AND DISTRIBUTION PAYMENTS MADE QUARTERLY THROUGH ESCROW ACCOUNT. ARTISTS RECEIVE .60% PER TRACK PLACEMENT PER UNIT SOLD

– PLEASE REFER TO http://itsmyurls.com/globalmixtapes & http://itsmyurls.com/elevatedscott FOR MORE INFO…

I am all for small business and entrepreneurship but I am not for someone getting over. There is fair market value and then there is busting someone over the head. Anyone who signs up for either of these deals will be getting hit over the head. Don’t be that guy or girl. Use your money wisely.

He stated that a portion of the proceeds is donated. The Hunger Project is an actual reputable non-profit but you can see pictures of him in a jet. Seriously? You couldn’t fly coach?

And no where is is stated that your submission is guaranteed, nor is there a stated maximum or minimum or which volume you will be on, so after taking 15 submissions he would have taken in $1485 minus the $49 to submit to TuneCore and $99 for Jango that is a pure profit of $1337 per mix CD.. Now imagine if he did this on a monthly basis….insane is not it.

The reality of it is, some of you will disregard everything I just said and take the deal anyway because your either stupid or lazy and a month from now you will still be wondering why your career has not moved…

You guys can click on the links and check out the links that were provided via the Facebook and emails that were sent.

I will give credit where credit is due, The Alexa and Compete standings on all sites provided were pretty impressive for sites that have only been in existence for a few months. The only other way to establish that would be to have them as a subdomain of an already existing site within the same hosting and based on the BS that I got so far, I am banking on option B.

Im just sayin…
